Sonic Symphony

If there was one game you bought a Sega console for—when Sega still made them—it was Sonic the Hedgehog. Now immortalised in a TV series and a few movies, the character seems to have survived the eventual demise of the Sega consoles. While Sonic games are few and far apart, this new collection of Sonic X Shadow Generations is something special.

It’s two games meld into one, and they feature the Sonic speed run formula in an almost perfect three-dimensional format. The game is not new, though. It’s an updated remastered version of an old game, Sonic Generations, from 2011. However, the Shadow part of it is new, which makes this a great addition to an already great game.

Let’s start with the OG Sonic Generations game. The original was already pretty good; it combined Sonic’s classic 2D platforming and added 3D gameplay with the ability to play the stage in both dimensions. It also played heavily into nostalgia by revisiting and redesigning sonic levels with modern graphics and enhanced visuals. The overarching story tied everything together in a nice little package. With the remastering of the game, the Sonic team worked on the story, giving it a whole new voiceover for the English version of the game. The game also plays at 60FPS, making it feel a lot more modern.

The star of the remake, however, is Shadow Generations, which tells the story from Shadow’s perspective. The gameplay is much more refined and plays into the nostalgia of 2D and 3D Sonic gameplay but with Shadow’s powers. I found the story bits, which are also told in cut scenes throughout the game, to be a complimentary angle to the Sonic game. This game goes above and beyond a typical remaster and is probably one of the best, if not the best, Sonic the Hedgehog game out there.

If you have enjoyed the previous Sonic Generations game on a different platform, the R3,999 price might be a little prohibitive. The addition of Shadows sweetens the deal a little bit, but I would wait for the eventual discount. However, if you are a Generations novice, then this game at this price point will still make sense as you could spend hours playing it.
