Understanding Sound Waves

  • A frequency of 440 Hz is the standard tuning pitch for musical instruments, recognized as the note ‘A’.
  • Frequencies above 20,000 Hz are considered ultrasonic and are not detectable by human ears.

Amplitude and Volume

Amplitude refers to the height of the sound wave and is directly related to its loudness. The greater the amplitude, the louder the sound will be. Measured in decibels (dB), sound levels can range from the faintest sounds heard by humans at 0 dB to sounds over 120 dB, which can cause pain and hearing damage.

  • Medicine: Ultrasound technology uses high-frequency sound waves for imaging and diagnostic purposes.
