Extracting Color: The Process
The extraction of natural dyes typically involves several steps: harvesting, preparation, extraction, and application. For instance, to extract pigment from beetroot, one would follow these steps:
- Harvesting: Fresh beetroots are chosen for their vibrant color.
- Preparation: The beetroots are washed and chopped to increase surface area.
- Extraction: The chopped beetroots are boiled in water, allowing the pigments to leach into the liquid.
- Application: The dye can be used immediately or concentrated further for stronger color.
