The FIFA World Cup 2026 match between Portugal and DR Congo ended in a 1-1 draw at the Houston Stadium in Texas.

Following the draw, Portugal`s head coach, Roberto Martinez, said that his side will have to improve and also said that the attitude of the players was extraordinary.

“We do have to improve. We have to be very self-critical. Our responsibility here, I think, is to assess this match, be self-critical, and that`s the bottom line, the World Cup is like that. We continue our work. I noticed that the attitude of the players was extraordinary first and foremost, and I do believe in what we can do,” he said.

The coach then said that the first goal`s moment should have helped the Portuguese men to build the momentum, but the side failed to capitalise on it.

“We scored in a moment where usually the emotions really help out to continue with that momentum and try to score that second goal, but it was actually the opposite effect for us,” said Martinez.

Portugal`s skipper Cristiano Ronaldo had a quiet outing as he struggled to make an impact during the campaign-opening match against DR Congo.

Following the draw, the skipper shared a post on his official social media handle. “It wasn`t the start we wanted, but this is far from over. Head up and focus on the next game,” read the post`s caption.
