AI is writing millions of books every month:3 times more books published on Amazon; but readers found them less useful
If you search for new books on Amazon, there’s a possibility that a large number of them may not have been written by an author, but by AI. After the arrival of large language models like ChatGPT in 2022, the number of e-books published monthly on Amazon has increased from around 1 lakh to 3 lakh. This means in just three years, this figure has nearly tripled. Cornell University economist Imke Reimers and University of Minnesota Professor Joel Waldfogel analyzed around 50,000 books. They compared based on AI detection tools, Amazon ratings, and sales. The conclusion was clear that the number of AI books increased rapidly. However, they received lower ratings. Sales were also less than books by human authors. Readers found them less useful. Publishers are also adopting AI. The famous travel guide company Fodor’s has created its own chatbot. It creates travel guides based on their edited content.
