Ex-Germany midfielder and Real Madrid legend Toni Kroos shared a direct response to Spain’s 2026 FIFA World Cup victory, uploading a short two-word statement on social media after La Roja edged Argentina 1-0 in extra time during Sunday’s final match.

Moments after the match concluded at MetLife Stadium, Kroos wrote on X, “Football won.”

The statement was widely seen as Kroos’ assessment of Spain overcoming Lionel Messi’s Argentina, which was attempting to become the first nation in 64 years to retain the World Cup trophy.

The Spanish squad captured their second World Cup trophy courtesy of Ferran Torres’ match-winning goal in the 106th minute, capping off a gruelling battle in the New Jersey heat.

Luis de la Fuente’s team controlled play for long stretches of the final but required extra time to finally breach the Argentine defence. Goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez saved multiple dangerous efforts to deny Dani Olmo, Ferran Torres, and Pau Cubarsi, while Enzo Fernandez was shown a red card in late second-half injury time, forcing the reigning champions to play the extra period with ten men.

Spain believed they had taken the lead earlier in extra time when Nico Williams scored, but the goal was disallowed due to a foul in the buildup. Torres ultimately broke the deadlock, firing home from a short distance following a knockdown pass from Williams to secure the 1-0 win for La Roja.

This win marked Spain’s first World Cup championship since 2010 and stretched their undefeated streak in international play to a European record of 38 matches.

Kroos, widely considered among the top midfielders of his era, hung up his boots in 2024 following a trophy-filled spell with Real Madrid.

Celebrated for his exceptional vision, poise, and passing accuracy, the German midfielder claimed 34 major titles across a 17-year playing career, leaving him behind only Thomas Muller among the most decorated German footballers in history.
