A discarded part of a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket has crashed into the Moon after spending months drifting through space, according to The Independent. The impact, which was expected by astronomers, was powerful enough to create a new crater on the lunar surface, but it posed no danger to Earth. Although scientists had hoped to spot a brief flash from the collision, observers on Earth were unable to see it. Researchers are now waiting for orbiting spacecraft to capture images of the impact site in the coming days. What crashed into the Moon? The object was the upper stage of a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket, not an active spacecraft. It was launched in 2025 to carry two private lunar landers and scientific equipment to the Moon. After completing its mission, the rocket stage remained in space because it had no fuel left to return to Earth or change its orbit. Over time, the combined effects of gravity and solar activity pushed it onto a collision course with the Moon. How powerful was the impact?
Scientists estimate the 4,000 kg rocket stage struck the Moon with the force of around three tonnes of TNT. The collision is expected to have created a new crater on the Moon and thrown dust and debris into the surrounding area. Researchers believed there was a small chance of seeing a brief flash from the collision. However, astronomers watching through telescopes did not detect any visible sign of the impact. The flash was expected to last for less than a second and was likely too faint to be seen from Earth. Why are there no live images of the Moon impact? There are no live images of the Moon impact because none of the spacecraft orbiting the Moon were in the right position to capture the collision as it happened. Scientists must first compare images of the lunar surface taken before and after the impact to identify the newly formed crater, a process that takes time. South Korea’s Danuri lunar orbiter came closest to the impact site before the collision and had the best chance of recording it. However, its team has said that any images or footage will only be released after researchers complete their analysis, and no timeline has been announced. Meanwhile, NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) is expected to photograph the impact site during its upcoming passes over the area. Ground-based telescopes in the Americas, where it was still nighttime during the impact, may also have captured the brief flash or dust cloud. However, scientists need time to process and verify the raw data before confirming and releasing any images. This analysis can take several hours or even days. Why did the rocket crash into the Moon? The collision was not planned. Unlike many Falcon 9 missions, this launch required extra power to send its payload towards the Moon. As a result, the upper stage could not return to Earth and drifted in space. After running out of fuel, it was unable to change direction. Over the following months, the effects of gravity and solar activity gradually pushed it onto a path that culminated in a collision with the Moon.
