Jharkhand: Two-day festival begins in Ranchi to celebrate tribal culture

The ‘Adivasi Mahotsav’ began in Ranchi on Sunday, celebrating tribal culture, traditions and history.

The event, coinciding with the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples, began with a ‘Jatra Shobha Yatra’ from Birsa Munda Memorial Park at Jail More to Morabadi ground, where the main event is being held.

Tribal men and women from 32 communities, dressed in traditional attire and dancing to the beats of the ‘dhol’ and ‘mandar’, participated in the procession.

Chief Minister Hemant Soren also joined the procession, showcasing the traditional folk culture of the tribal communities.

“With the objective of preserving the distinct identity and glorious heritage of the entire indigenous communities, we initiated this event,” Soren said while addressing the inaugural ceremony.

He said the festival sought to present a glimpse of the lives, cultures and traditions of indigenous communities from different parts of the country as well as Jharkhand.

Governor Santosh Gangwar said the tribal communities of the state had been conveying the message of conservation and promotion of nature for centuries.

“When the entire world is facing serious challenges such as climate change and environmental crisis, the tribal philosophy of life is a source of inspiration for all of humanity,” he said.

Gangwar said it was necessary to strike a balance between environmental and natural heritage conservation and the pace of development.
