Independence Day 2026: Exhibition on history of 'Tiranga' opens in J-K

A specially curated four-day exhibition showcasing the history and journey of the Indian national flag commenced in the twin capitals of Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday, officials said.

As part of the nation-wide ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ campaign celebrating and honouring the tricolour as a symbol of national pride, the Department of Archives, Archaeology and Museums is organising the exhibition at the Dogra Art Museum Archival Repository in Jammu and the Art Gallery in Srinagar from August 12 to 15, an official spokesman said.

The exhibition offers a glimpse into the evolution of the ‘Tiranga’ and the journey that led to its adoption, he said.

It will also take visitors through the adoption of the Ashoka Chakra to some important moments in its history, the spokesman said.

On display are rare archival photographs and stories linked to the tricolour, including its hoisting at Port Blair, its first raising in Parliament, its journey to the snowy heights of Mount Everest and its unfurling at the Tololing peak in Drass, Ladakh, by the Indian Army.

The exhibition also showcases inspiring moments when the national flag travelled beyond the borders and became a symbol of India’s pride and achievement, the spokesman said.

Entry to the exhibition is free for the visitors, he added.
