IND vs SL 1st Test: Rain delay start of match on Day 2

On Day 2 of the first Test match between Team India and Sri Lanka, the start of the game was delayed due to rain at the Galle International Cricket Stadium near Galle Fort.

Team India’s Devdutt Padikkal and wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant will resume with the overnight score of 288 runs for the loss of two wickets in 73 overs.

Padikkal seems to be in good touch as he has already completed his century. So far, having faced 178 balls, the left-handed batsman has reached the score of  131 runs, with the help of 12 boundaries and a maximum. Playing his first Test since featuring against Australia in Perth in 2024, the 26-year-old left-hander showcased his growing maturity at the international level. Earlier in the day, Padikkal combined with KL Rahul for a dominant 150-run second-wicket stand.

On the other hand, Pant has garnered 27 runs in 36 balls, including three boundaries and a maximum.

Sri Lanka’s Prabath Jayasuriya has claimed one wicket by conceding 77 runs in 24 overs.

Earlier, having opted to bat first, Team India’s opening batsman Yashasvi Jaiswal departed after scoring 32 runs in 37 balls, including five boundaries. Fellow opening batsman Rahul retired hurt on the score of 77 runs. He faced 162 balls and smashed nine boundaries along with a maximum.

Skipper Shubman Gill managed to score 16 runs off 28 balls, including two boundaries.

Sri Lanka‘s Asitha Fernando, Lahiru Kumara, Keshara Nuwantha, Dhananjaya de Silva, and Sonal Dinusha are yet to claim any wickets.

This is India’s 600th Test, making it a historic occasion for the players, especially as it is being played on the visitors’ Independence Day.
