BWF World Championships: Treesa-Gayatri enter quarter-finals of mega tournament

In the BWF World Championships, Indian women’s doubles pair Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand secured a straight win over Japan’s seventh seeds Rin Iwanaga and Kie Nakanishi.
The Indian pair registered a win by 21-16, 21-12 against the Japanese duo to seal a place in the quarter-finals of the ongoing marquee event.
Treesa and Gayatri, who were awarded the Arjuna Award for 2025, had made it to the All England Open semi-finals in back-to-back years in 2022 and 2023. They also won a Commonwealth Games bronze in 2022 and broke into the top 10 at the start of last year.
They will now lock horns with China’s Jia Yifan and Zhang Shuxian in the quarter-finals of the BWF World Championships. The match is scheduled to be played on Friday at 1.30 PM.
BWF World Championships: Lakshya Sen’s shocking defeat
On the other hand, star Indian shuttler Lakshya Sen suffered a shocking exit on Wednesday against 18-year-old American Garret Tan losing 21-19, 19-21, 17-21.
Competing at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium, the World No. 14 captured a tight opening game 21-19 despite trailing 10-11 at the mid-game break. However, Tan, ranked 92nd in the world, controlled the second game by building an early 9-4 lead. Sen managed to save four game points late in the game, but Tan shut the door with a smash winner to force a third game.
Tan surged ahead 11-4 at the final interval. Sen mounted a strong fightback to cut the deficit to 17-15. Following a brief pause for medical treatment after hitting his head, Tan held his ground to earn four match points, converting the second to wrap up the victory.
Meanwhile, India’s star female shuttler PV Sindhu has advanced to round of 16. She will clash against China’s Wang Zhiyi on Thursday at 3.30 PM.
Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy will also take on Malaysia’s Yap Roy King and Junaidi Arif in the men’s doubles category. They will play in the round of 16 clash on Thursday at 3.55 pm.
In the mixed doubles category, India’s Dhruv Kapila and Tanisha Crasto will face China’s Chen Fanghui and Guo Xinwa in the round of 16 match on Thursday at 2.35 PM.
