Chopra weighs in on Yashasvi Jaiswal-Harsha Bhogle debate over Fernando clash

In the second Test match against Sri Lanka, Team India’s opening batsman Yashasvi Jaiswal was seen getting involved in a heated altercation with the hosts’ pacer Asitha Fernando.

Following the incident, renowned commentator Harsha Bhogle said in a video that Jaiswal should have walked away after his dismissal.

Former Team India cricketer Aakash Chopra’s remarks came after Jaiswal responded to Cricbuzz’s video in which Bhogle title, ‘Did Jaiswal cross the line?’

“If you don’t know what he said then please don’t make your judgment if anyone cross the line we need to let them know this India will fight and reply,” Jaiswal commented.

Chopra feels that Bhogle comes from a background of an old-school philosophy of cricket, following which the commentator expressed his views in the video.

“Harsha Bhogle comes from an old-school philosophy of cricket. He felt that Yashasvi Jaiswal got too close to Asitha Fernando and, in a heated moment like that, the right thing to do is to simply walk away. But Jaiswal chose to react. Now I’m wondering: who is right? Can both of them be right?,” the former cricketer said on his YouTube channel.

He also noted that the left-handed batsman has faced constant banter in the ongoing Test match against Sri Lanka and said that Jaiswal is a player who would like to take on the challenge.

“There is constant banter and plenty of send-offs aimed at Jaiswal, and sometimes it crosses the line and goes below the belt. Jaiswal, though, is someone who likes to give it back and take on the challenge,” said Chopra.

He then feels that the new generation of players likes to respond to confrontation immediately. The former cricketer concluded by saying that Bhogle and Jaiswal are correct in their respective positions.

“This is a new way of doing things. Otherwise, I would say, let Yashasvi go as well, let him leave, and after a few days, the matter would be over. But our youth, this new generation, says, ‘Why should I wait? If you have said something about me, I will prove right now, today, whether it is right or wrong. I will show you.’ That’s the new way of actually approaching the world and content,” said Chopra.

“Both the guys have shared their opinions in this Banter. Both are correct in their respective positions,” he concluded.

Having opted to bat first, the visitors decided to declare the first innings on the score of 503 runs for the loss of nine wickets in 138 overs.

Devdutt Padikkal smashed 117 runs off 193 deliveries, with the help of 12 boundaries. Along with him, Dhruv Jurel delivered an unbeaten knock of 115 runs in 117 balls, including nine boundaries and two maximums.
