Getting late to office every day due to traffic?:Try these 5 Google Maps tricks to improve your daily commute
Whether you travel by bike, car, or public transport, reaching your destination on time can be a daily struggle. The problem becomes even bigger during office hours, when busy roads, traffic jams, and unexpected stops can make even a short journey frustrating. Google Maps is already a part of many people’s daily commute, but the app offers several useful features that go beyond simply showing directions. Here are seven Google Maps tricks that can make your everyday travel easier and less stressful. 1. Add a stop without changing your entire route Sometimes you need to make an unexpected stop while travelling. You may need fuel, want to grab a coffee, or pick up something on the way. You don’t have to cancel your current navigation.
While following a route, tap the magnifying glass and search for the place you want to visit. You can also choose from options such as petrol pumps, restaurants, and other nearby places. Google Maps will show you how much extra time the stop could add to your journey. Once you choose a place, tap ‘Add stop’ and continue your trip. Tip: If you’re driving, make these changes only after safely stopping the vehicle or ask a passenger to do it. 2. Tell Maps what time you need to reach Have an important meeting, appointment, or flight? Instead of guessing when to leave, you can tell Google Maps when you need to arrive. Enter your destination and tap ‘Directions.’ Then tap the ‘three dots’ and select ‘Set depart or arrive time.’ Choose Arrive, enter your date and time, and Maps will estimate when you should leave. 3. Download maps before going offline A weak internet connection can make navigation difficult, especially when you’re travelling through rural areas or places with poor mobile coverage.
Google Maps lets you download an area in advance. Search for the location, tap ‘More > Download offline map,’ adjust the area if needed, and tap ‘Download.’ Once saved, you can use the map for driving directions even without an internet connection, provided your complete route is inside the downloaded area.
However, offline Maps won’t provide live traffic updates, alternative routes, walking directions, cycling routes, or public transport information. 4. Share your live trip progress If someone is waiting for you, you can share your journey with them through Google Maps. Start navigation, swipe up on the information card, and tap Share trip progress. You can then choose a contact or share the link through another app. The person you share it with can see your current location, destination, and estimated arrival time. The sharing automatically stops when you reach your destination or stop navigation. 5. Save where you parked your car We’ve all experienced that moment when we leave a parking area and can’t remember where we parked. Google Maps can save your parking location.
After parking, tap the ‘blue location dot’ and select ‘Save’ your parking on Android or Save parking on iPhone. When you’re ready to leave, search for Parking location or Saved parking in Maps to find your car. 6. Check traffic before you leave Before starting your journey, check the traffic layer on Google Maps. It can give you a quick idea of which roads are crowded and where delays are happening. This is particularly useful during morning and evening office hours, when traffic can change your travel time significantly. – Open Google Maps. – Tap the Layers icon (stacked squares) on the right side of the screen. – Select Traffic under map details. Look at the colored lines on your route: You can then decide whether to leave earlier or take another available route. 7. Use voice commands while travelling You don’t always need to touch your phone to use Google Maps. Voice commands can help you perform common tasks while navigating. You can use voice commands to search for places, find petrol pumps, ask for directions, or get information about your route. This is especially useful when you’re driving because you can interact with Maps without constantly looking at or touching your phone. Key takeaway: Google Maps doesn’t just show a road. It continuously combines your location, maps, and traffic information to help you reach your destination.
Google Maps is more than just a navigation app. These simple features can help you save time, avoid traffic-related stress, and make your daily commute smoother.
From adding stops to saving your parking location, a few small tricks can make a big difference to your everyday travel.
