Significance of Janmashtami

Janmashtami celebrates the birth of Lord Krishna, who is believed to have been born at midnight in Mathura to Devaki and Vasudeva. According to Hindu tradition, Krishna’s birth marked the beginning of the end of King Kansa’s tyranny.

Devotees observe the festival as a day of faith and devotion, with many fasting until midnight and offering prayers to Krishna.

Janmashtami fasting: What to eat and avoid

Those who are observing a Janmashtami fast may have fruits, milk, curd, buttermilk, nuts and coconut water. Vrat-friendly foods such as sabudana, makhana, potatoes and sweet potatoes are also commonly consumed.

Regular grains and cereals such as rice and wheat, along with pulses and regular flour-based foods, are generally avoided during the fast. Onion, garlic, meat, and eggs are also avoided.

Fasting rules vary according to family and regional traditions, so devotees should follow the customs they observe.

Rituals

Janmashtami rituals include fasting, temple visits, devotional singing, bhajans and midnight prayers. Devotees may bathe and dress Krishna idols, decorate them with flowers and offer sweets and other prasad.

The main celebration takes place around midnight, when devotees mark Krishna’s birth. The following day, Dahi Handi celebrations are held in several parts of India, particularly Maharashtra. In 2026, Dahi Handi will be observed on Saturday, September 5.
