In a landmark moment for the global South Asian performing arts landscape, contemporary Indian spoken-word poetry artist Nayab Midha just wrapped up the North American leg of her flagship live production, ‘Rajkumari’.
‘Rajkumari’ debuted in 2023 before an intimate audience across India. Before heading west, its domestic leg expanded into a multi-city tour, culminating in a performance at New Delhi’s Talkatora Stadium.
Regional spoken word has traditionally remained localised, but Nayab’s cross-continental run has demonstrated the global viability of the art form, with highly receptive diaspora and international audiences gathering in major metropolitan hubs. In the United States, the tour commanded fine arts theatres in Boston, Chicago, Atlanta, the Bay Area, Dallas, Phoenix, Seattle, Raleigh, Washington D.C., New Jersey, Detroit and New York.
In Canada, the momentum carried through packed venues in Vancouver, Toronto and Calgary on the 15-city tour, produced in partnership with Tarashna and Oho Productions Inc.
Nayab Midha shares, “When we first envisioned ‘Rajkumari’, it was an intimate piece of my heart meant for small rooms. Seeing it evolve into a multi-continental movement that fills fine arts theatres and stadiums is completely surreal. This milestone isn’t just about ticket sales or revenue numbers; it is proof that contemporary Hindi spoken-word and storytelling have a roaring, commercially viable global audience. The diaspora in the US and Canada welcomed these raw, vulnerable stories with open arms, proving that deep human emotions transcend borders. We have shattered the glass ceiling for what a solo storyteller can achieve on the global stage, and this is only the beginning.”
The ‘Rajkumari’ production, named after the Hindi word for ‘Princess’, is a deeply immersive, theatrical spoken-word experience that fuses vulnerability, quick-witted humour, live instrumentation and audience interaction. The performance maps complex narratives surrounding identity, emotional resilience, self-discovery and modern relationships.
Following the remarkable response to its North American tour, ‘Rajkumari’ is expected to return to the United States, with further dates anticipated. The production will next travel to London and cities across Europe, continuing Nayab Midha’s journey of taking contemporary Hindi poetry and storytelling to audiences across the world.
