A Durga Puja pandal in Bidhannagar has paid tribute to legendary mime artist Yogesh Dutta through a theme exploring the trauma of partition, displacement and the loss of one’s homeland.
Titled ‘Chhinnamul’ (The Displaced), the theme depicts Dutta’s life and the suffering associated with partition, highlighting the human cost of losing one’s home and roots.
The pandal set up at Shuri Bagan area of Bidhannagar has been conceptualised by Priyanka Ghosh, a woman theme artist.
Dutta was born in Faridpur, now in Bangladesh.
Following partition in 1947, he became a refugee and was displaced from his ancestral home, according to a report by Anandabazar Patrika, Ghosh said.
There are installations showing mime stage movement of Pyne and writing chronicling his childhood in then-East Pakistan and crossing over to this part of the country. There are also artworks suggesting how he had depicted the agonies and pangs of partition and the sufferings by migrants reflected in his works.
The installation seeks to connect his personal journey with the larger experiences of displacement and anguish endured by people during partition, using art to narrate a story of loss, identity and resilience, she said.
The theme brings together the pain of displacement, the trauma of borders and the power of artistic expression, offering visitors an opportunity to reflect on the human consequences of partition during the Durga Puja festivities.
