West Bengal: Doctors in Kalyani removes 2.9-kg rare brain tumour from Bihar man
Doctors at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in West Bengal’s Kalyani have successfully removed a rare brain tumour weighing nearly 2.9 kg from a man from Bihar in a complex two-stage surgical procedure, a senior official of the hospital said on Thursday.
The 26-year-old patient, identified as Sonai Mondal, a resident of Katihar district, was admitted to AIIMS Kalyani on September 15, after a large, multilobulated growth on his scalp rapidly increased in size over seven months, he said.
The tumour, measuring approximately 45cm x 42cm x 32cm, had extended into the skull and deep into the left parieto-occipital region of the brain, while also involving major venous channels, making the surgery particularly challenging, the official said.
AIIMS Kalyani Executive Director Prof Aravind Sinha described the case as exceptionally rare, saying it was a malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumour (MPNST) with extensive intracranial and extra-calvarial involvement.
“This is an exceptionally rare case because of the tumour’s massive size, its involvement of major venous channels and vital areas of the brain, and the patient’s young age,” Sinha said.
Given the complex vascular involvement, doctors decided against preoperative embolisation, a procedure used to block blood vessels supplying a tumour before surgery, to avoid additional risks, the official said.
The first operation, involving a craniotomy and complete excision of the tumour under general anaesthesia, was performed on September 15. A second procedure, involving titanium mesh cranioplasty to reconstruct the affected portion of the skull, was carried out on October 14, Sinha said.
The neurosurgical team included doctors Saswati Kumar Dandapat, Sumit Roy Chowdhury and Koustav Saha, he said, adding that the patient underwent treatment under the Centre’s Ayushman Bharat scheme.
