ISRO has identified a landing site near the Moon’s South Pole for the Chandrayaan-4 mission. Based on images received from the Chandrayaan-2 orbiter, scientists have identified the Mons Mouton (MM-4) region as the most suitable for landing. Mons Mouton is a mountain approximately 6,000 meters high located near the Moon’s South Pole. Its peak is largely flat, which is favorable for landing. However, the final decision regarding the landing site will be made closer to the launch. According to scientists, this area is also important because it receives sunlight for a long time. Additionally, there is a possibility of water ice being present in this region. Help received from Chandrayaan-2 images According to media reports, scientists presented this study at the Lunar and Planetary Science Conference (LPSC 2026). Images from the Orbiter High-Resolution Camera (OHRC) on board the Chandrayaan-2 orbiter were used to determine the landing site. This camera shows the lunar surface at a resolution of about 32 centimeters per pixel. This clearly reveals small craters, rocks, slopes, and the texture of the surface, allowing dangerous areas for landing to be identified in advance. Why MM-4 was chosen for landing Chandrayaan-4 will return with samples In this mission worth 2104 crore rupees, lunar rocks and soil will be brought back to Earth. Two different rockets will be used in the mission. The heavy-lifter LVM-3 and ISRO’s reliable workhorse PSLV will carry different payloads. Stack 1 includes an ascender module for lunar sample collection and a descender module for lunar sample collection on the surface. Stack 2 includes a propulsion module for thrust, a transfer module for sample hold, and a re-entry module to bring the samples back to Earth.
