Sam Altman confirms Mumbai, Bengaluru offices:Tata Group, OpenAI join hands to build 100MW AI data centre in India
In a major move that signals how serious global tech giants are about India, the Tata Group, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), and OpenAI have announced a wide-ranging strategic partnership.
The collaboration covers AI infrastructure, enterprise adoption, workforce skilling, and industry-specific AI solutions, both in India and globally. At the heart of the partnership is a bold infrastructure plan: building India’s first large-scale AI-optimised data centre. India’s first 100MW AI data centre, scaling to 1 gigawatt As part of the agreement, Tata Group will set up a 100-megawatt AI-focused data centre designed specifically for AI training and inference workloads. Over time, this facility is expected to scale up to a massive one gigawatt capacity. The project will be developed in collaboration with OpenAI and will support next-generation AI systems that require enormous computing power. This also aligns with TCS’s data centre initiative, HyperVault, launched in 2025 to build gigawatt-scale, AI-ready infrastructure powered by green energy. These facilities are designed with liquid cooling, high rack density, and strong network connectivity, features essential for advanced AI operations. OpenAI expands India presence The company has announced plans to open new offices in Mumbai and Bengaluru later this year, adding to its existing presence in New Delhi. India has already crossed 100 million weekly ChatGPT users, making it OpenAI’s second-largest market globally after the United States and its largest in Asia.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said India is playing a key role in shaping the future of AI. India is already leading the way in AI adoption, and with its talent, ambition, and strong government support, it is well placed to help shape its future. Through OpenAI for India and our partnership with the Tata Group, we’re working together to build the infrastructure, skills, and local partnerships needed to build AI with India, for India, and in India, so that more people across the country can access and benefit from it.
ChatGPT enterprise for Tata employees Tata Group plans to roll out ChatGPT Enterprise across its businesses in the coming years. The deployment is expected to cover hundreds of thousands of employees, making it one of the largest enterprise AI rollouts in the region. ChatGPT Enterprise offers stronger data security, privacy controls and administrative features suited for large organisations. TCS will also use OpenAI’s Codex to improve software development efficiency and engineering productivity. Industry-specific AI solutions OpenAI and TCS will work together to build customised AI solutions for different industries. The idea is to combine OpenAI’s advanced AI systems with TCS’s deep industry knowledge and global client base. This means enterprises, in India and abroad, will be able to deploy and scale OpenAI’s AI tools in ways tailored to their specific business needs. Natarajan Chandrasekaran, Chairman of Tata Sons, called the collaboration a major step for India’s AI ambitions. This deep collaboration between OpenAI and the Tata Group marks a major milestone in India’s vision to become a global leader in AI. We are pleased to partner with OpenAI to create state-of-the-art AI infrastructure in India. This is a unique opportunity for OpenAI and TCS to transform industries. Together we will skill India’s youth and empower them to succeed in the AI era. With this partnership, India is not just consuming AI; it is helping build the backbone that powers it.
