Former Mumbai left-arm spinner Harmeet Singh, 33, who represented USA at the ongoing T20 World Cup, got emotional when he revisited Shivaji Park Gymkhana (SPG) on Thursday evening.

Before representing the Unmukt Chand-led team in India’s U-19 World Cup triumph in Australia in 2012, Harmeet had trained under former India batter Pravin Amre and veteran Mumbai left-arm spinner Padmakar Shivalkar at the SPG academy.

“Harmeet recalled how his mother used to accompany him to train at the SPG academy every day and how he benefited by the guidance of Amre and learnt the art of left-arm spin from Shivalkar, a domestic stalwart,” SPG secretary Sanjeev Khanolkar told mid-day on Friday.

Harmeet spent a lot of time sharing his experiences as an international player with some of the current academy players and also enjoyed his favourite vada pav with them.

“Harmeet got emotional during his speech and started crying while recalling his past experiences here. [India’s current ODI team vice-captain] Shreyas Iyer and [Indian pacers] Shardul Thakur and Tushar Deshpande were his teammates during their SPG academy training days,” Khanolkar added.

Harmeet, who represented Rajasthan Royals in IPL, has claimed seven scalps in four games at this T20 World Cup.
