India’s data centre power demand to surge 800%:Requirement may hit 13.56 GW by 2031–32, driven by rising use of AI, digital services
Due to the increasing use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and digital services in the country, electricity demand from data centres is expected to rise rapidly. By 2031–32, electricity demand from data centres could reach 13.56 gigawatts. At present, data centre capacity in the country is expanding quickly. It stood at 375 megawatts in 2020 and has increased to about 1,500 megawatts by 2025. Over the next seven years, electricity demand is estimated to grow by around 800%. According to the government, to promote AI development, 38,231 GPUs have been made available through 14 service providers and data centres. These are being provided to start-ups, research institutions and educational institutions at a subsidised average rate of ₹65 per hour. Minister of State for Electronics and IT Jitin Prasada informed the Rajya Sabha on Friday that the country’s major data centres are located in Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Noida and Jamnagar. 65% of Indians have used AI The use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) is growing rapidly in India. According to a 2024 to 2025 report by Microsoft, around 65% of Indians have used generative AI such as chatbots or AI applications at least once. The country’s population is about 1.4 billion. Around 65% of this, roughly 900 to 950 million people, have used AI tools in some form. AI app downloads have also risen sharply in India. In 2025, Indians downloaded around 0.6 billion, or 600 million, AI applications. These tools are widely used for studies, answering questions, translation, improving work productivity and content creation. Minister of State for Health Prataprao Jadhav informed that in 2008-09 there were 12.03 lakh deliveries through surgery, which rose to 54.35 lakh in 2024-25. Total deliveries increased from 1.88 crore to 1.98 crore. In 2024-25, 27.46% of all deliveries were C-sections. During the same period, the maternal mortality rate declined from 212 to 88 and the infant mortality rate from 57 to 25. 3,100 violent incidents in Bangladesh by February 2026 Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita informed that between August 2024 and February 2026 there were about 3,100 incidents of violence against Hindus and other minorities in Bangladesh. Figures compiled by human rights organisations include attacks on homes, properties, businesses and places of worship. Amendment Bill on transgender rights introduced in Lok Sabha Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment Virendra Kumar introduced the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Amendment Bill, 2026 in the Lok Sabha. The aim of the bill is to amend the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act, 2019 in order to clearly define transgender persons and provide them with stronger legal protection. The existing law does not clearly define a transgender person, and therefore a new definition has been proposed. The bill also provides for the establishment of a special authority to offer guidance when required. The bill further proposes granting transgender persons the right to make necessary changes in government documents. It also includes provisions for strict and specific punishments for serious offences such as abduction or forced harm.
