‘AI is like Bhasmasur’, says Rajnath Singh:Comparing AI to a mythological demon, Defence Minister warns misuse could harm multiple sectors
At the ANI National Security Summit 2.0, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh compared Artificial Intelligence (AI) to the mythological demon Bhasmasur, warning that powerful technology can become dangerous if misused. Here’s what he said and why it matters. AI: A powerful tool with a risky side Rajnath Singh highlighted what experts call the “dual-use dilemma” of AI. This means the same technology that helps society can also create serious threats. He warned that tools like deepfakes, cyber warfare systems, and autonomous weapons are already creating new security challenges. According to him, these risks are not temporary they will grow in the coming years. He said policymakers must avoid looking only at the positive side of AI while planning national security strategies. Why he compared AI to Bhasmasur To explain the danger, Singh used the story of Bhasmasur from Indian mythology. In the tale, Lord Shiva granted the demon a powerful boon, but it later became a threat itself. Similarly, Singh said advanced AI systems can strengthen banks, hospitals, and power grids. But in the wrong hands, the same systems could damage or destroy these critical services. His message was clear: AI’s strength makes it both useful and risky at the same time. How AI is already helping India’s Defence forces Despite the concerns, Singh also stressed that AI is improving India’s military capabilities. He said AI played an important role during Operation Sindoor, especially in boosting the precision of BrahMos missile systems and improving surveillance platforms. He also pointed to the Sudarshan Air Defence project as an example of how AI can strengthen national security. The armed forces are now building a roadmap using AI, machine learning, and big data to prepare for future threats. AI beyond warfare: Helping soldiers and veterans Singh noted that AI is not limited to combat roles. It is also improving everyday systems within the defence sector. For example, the government has introduced an AI-enabled dashboard to simplify pension processes for retired officers and veterans. This helps speed up services and improves their overall experience. He concluded that emerging technologies like AI can make India not only safer but also more empowered and prosperous in the future
