Ancient 24-foot ‘sea dragon’ Jormungander: Terrifying mosasaur that ruled oceans 80 million years ago
In 2015, paleontologists unearthed a new mosasaur species, Jormungander walhallaensi, in North Dakota. This 24-foot-long “sea dragon” lived 80 million years ago and bridges the evolutionary gap between smaller and giant mosasaurs. The nearly complete fossil, including skull, jaws, and spine, provides crucial insights into Late Cretaceous marine life and predator evolution, enhancing our understanding of prehistoric oceans.
