Author of ‘I want to die but I want to eat tteokbokki’ passes away at 35

Baek Se-hee, best known for her bestselling book ‘ I want to die but I want to eat tteokbokki’ has passed away at the young age of 35. She was declared brain-dead at the National Health Insurance Ilsan Hospital, in South Korea.
The Korean Organ Donation Agency announced the devastating news on October 17 KST. The agency didn’t highlight the cause of her death, however the post reveals that the author has saved multiple lives by donating her heart, both kidneys, lungs and liver.
Her book, published in 2018 spoke was a compilation of conversations with her psychiatrist about her depression. Originally written in Korean in 2018, the book found international acclaim in 2022 after its English translation was published.
Baek Se-hee was born in Goyang, Gyeonggi province of South Korea in 1990. She studied creative writing at university before moving onto work at a publishing house. Her book ‘I want to die but I want to eat tteokbokki’ depicted her own experience with a ten-year-long psychiatric treatment and dysthymia (persistent mild depression). Baek Se-hee`s 2018 memoir was lauded for its honest portrayal of mental health conversations.
The book had especially gained popularity among the Gen-Z for its candid portrayal of mental health conversations between the author and her therapist. Global Kpop boy band BTS’ leader RM had once recommended this massive hit, further boosting its popularity and skyrocketing its sales. The book was even spotted in the Korean rapper’s room in an episode of BTS’ travelling reality show ‘Bon Voyage Season 3.’ The bestseller was celebrated for normalising mental health conversations and its nuanced take on inner struggles.
I Want to Die but I Want to Eat Tteokbokki, published in 2018, has sold more than a million copies worldwide and been translated in 25 countries. She went on to release three additional parts to this runway hit over the next few years.
