Chinese companies shipping ‘Made in India’ phones to west:Oppo, Vivo, Xiaomi, Realme, and Transsion are now exporting smartphones and electronics to West Asia, Africa, and the US

Chinese electronics and smartphone makers are turning India into their export hub. Once reliant on China and Vietnam for global supply, these brands are now shipping products made in India to West Asia, Africa, and the US. The shift is driven by India’s push for local manufacturing and its production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme. Big names making big moves OPPO Mobiles India earned ₹272 crore from exports in FY24, while Realme raked in ₹114 crore. Other major players like Vivo, OnePlus, Xiaomi, and Transsion Holdings have also started exporting from India, mostly through partnerships with local contract manufacturers. Hisense, Lenovo, and Motorola join the wave Hisense Group plans to begin exporting TVs and appliances made in India to West Asia and Africa by early next year. Lenovo is preparing to ship laptops and servers, while its smartphone arm, Motorola, already exports phones to the US from Dixon Technologies’ plants. To meet surging demand, Dixon is expanding production by 50%. What’s driving the change This new export strategy comes after rising government scrutiny of Chinese firms following the 2020 border tensions. Despite their growing presence, none of these Chinese companies have yet appointed Indian nationals as managing directors or CEOs in their India operations. Smartphones lead India’s export boom Thanks to these efforts, smartphones have become India’s top export category in FY25, with shipments soaring 55% year-on-year. The future of India as a key global electronics exporter looks brighter than ever.
