Delhi doctors make history, removes giant tumor for free:Safdarjung hospital removes world’s biggest Adrenal tumor (18.2 x 13.5 cm) robotically
In a groundbreaking achievement, Delhi’s Safdarjung Hospital successfully removed the world’s largest adrenal tumour measuring 18.2 x 13.5 cm through robotic surgery. Dr. Sandeep Bansal, Medical Superintendent, confirmed it as the largest ever recorded. A team effort behind a historic surgery The complex, high-risk procedure was led by Dr. Pawan Vasudeva, Head of Urology and Renal Transplant, alongside Dr. Niraj Kumar and Dr. Avishek Mandal. The anaesthesia team, featuring Dr. Sushil, Dr. Bhavya, and Dr. Megha, played a crucial role. Navigating a high-risk challenge The tumour’s enormous size and attachment to critical organs like the Inferior Vena Cava, liver, and right kidney made the surgery highly risky. Dr. Vasudeva credited the Da Vinci robotic system’s 3D vision and agile arms for the precision needed to safely remove it. The surgery, lasting over three hours, was completed without harming any nearby organs. Quick recovery and big advantages Remarkably, the 36-year-old woman was discharged just three days later. Doctors highlighted robotic surgery’s benefits smaller cuts, less pain, quicker healing, and a faster return to daily life. In contrast, traditional surgery would have required a large incision and longer recovery. World-class care, free of cost Dr. Vasudeva noted that such a complex robotic surgery could cost several lakh rupees in private hospitals. Yet, Safdarjung Hospital performed it free of charge, reinforcing its mission to offer world-class healthcare that’s accessible to all.
