Dhanteras, also known as Dhanatrayodashi, marks the beginning of the five-day hindu festival Diwali or Tihar in most of India and Nepal. It is celebrated on the thirteenth lunar day of the Krishna Paksha, of the hindu calendar month of Ashwina or Kartika. In 2025, it will be celebrated on Saturday, October 18.
The word is derived from two words: ‘Dhan’ meaning ‘wealth’ and ‘Teras’ meaning thirteen.It is believed that buying gold and silver on this day brings prosperity and good luck to one`s family.
Significance
Dhanteras is a day dedicated to worship Lord Dhanvantari, revered as the incarnation of Lord Vishnu (the God of Ayurveda and Medicine) and Goddess Lakshmi (the Goddess of wealth and prosperity). The day is celebrated by cleaning and decorating the house, buying new utensils, jewellery, and other household items to bring in good luck.
History
There are many stories surrounding the origin of Dhanteras. According to the most popular story, it is believed that the horoscope of a King Hima’s son was doomed to die on the fourth day of his marriage after getting bitten by a snake. However his newly wed wife decided to turn the fate around. She didn’t let the prince sleep on the fourth night, by narrating stories.
To lure the snake away, she laid out all her ornaments and gold coins at the entrance in a large heap. It is believed that the God of death (Yama) himself came in the disguise of a snake and was bedazzled with all the riches. Unable to enter, Yama returned and spared the life of the prince.
Puja
On Dhanteras, people place seven types of grains, flowers and sweets in front of a photo of Goddess Lakshmi, light diyas and invite her in their home and worship her. In some parts of India, married women also observe a fast for their better half.
Dhanteras is more than just the beginning of a Diwali. It is also an opportunity for families to strengthen their bond.
