Engineering students can now get their textbooks in local languages:IGNOU and IIT Bombay team up to bring education in Indian languages via AI
Imagine flipping through a tough engineering textbook—but this time, it’s in your mother language. Feels easier and more comfortable, right? Well, that’s exactly what’s about to happen.
In a big leap towards blending technology with education, IGNOU has joined hands with IIT Bombay to make higher studies available in several Indian languages using the power of artificial intelligence. A smart alliance for smarter learning On May 30, the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) signed an MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay.
The collaboration focuses on ‘Project Udaan’—an AI-powered translation platform designed to convert academic and technical content into regional Indian languages, without losing the original format or meaning. The agreement was signed at IGNOU’s headquarters in New Delhi, in the presence of top academic leaders and officials from both institutions.
Representing IIT Bombay was Professor Ganesh Ramakrishnan, a leading name in AI and the Principal Investigator of Project Udaan. What’s Project Udaan all about At its core, Project Udaan aims to make learning easier for students who are more comfortable studying in their native languages. The platform uses a smart mix of: The collaboration supports the vision of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which emphasises education in local languages, digital inclusion, and equitable access. Opportunity for non-English speaking regions IGNOU, being one of the largest open universities in the world, already reaches millions of students.
Now, with the help of IIT Bombay’s AI expertise, its educational content will become even more accessible, especially to students in rural and non-English-speaking regions. A leap for Digital India and Bharat Bhasha This initiative is also aligned with national programs like Digital India and Bharat Bhasha, which promote regional language use in the digital world and inclusive AI development. By making education more inclusive and language-friendly, Project Udaan could become a game-changer for students across India, helping them learn better, faster, and in a language they truly understand.
