Hearing on Meta-WhatsApp privacy policy in Supreme Court today:Decision may come on the petition filed against the fine of Rs 213 crore
The Supreme Court will hear the Meta and WhatsApp privacy policy case today. Meta had filed a petition against the 213 crore fine imposed on it regarding its 2021 privacy policy. The Competition Commission of India (CCI) had imposed a fine of Rs 213.14 crore on Meta in November 2024. In the hearing held on February 3, the Supreme Court had severely reprimanded Meta and WhatsApp over their privacy policy. The court had said that we will not allow you to share even a single piece of information. You cannot toy with the rights of the citizens of this country. The case is being heard by a bench led by Chief Justice Suryakant. The bench also includes Justice Joymalya Bagchi and Justice N.V. Anjaria. The hearing was scheduled for February 9, but it was postponed due to senior advocate Kapil Sibal’s ill health. The court said that we will not allow you to share even a single piece of information. CJI Suryakant said that the right to privacy of people in the country is strictly protected. The court said that the privacy-related terms in these apps are written so cleverly that a common person cannot understand them. This is a polite way of stealing people’s private information. The court said that we will not allow you to do this. You will have to give a clear assurance on this, otherwise the court will have to issue an order.
