The fourth Test match between Team India and England ended in a draw. Washington Sundar was one of the heroes who played a crucial role in helping India to draw the match. He also scored his maiden Test century in Manchester.
Speaking about his maiden Test ton on JioHotstar, Sundar said, “This Test hundred feels very special”.
He also said that the message was very clear from head coach Gautam Gambhir to just `fight for an entire day`.
“I just wanted to fight for an entire day, and that was the only message given to me by the coach,” he said.
Sundar, who usually comes to bat in the lower middle-order, came to bat at number five. He said that it would be a blessing for him if he got the opportunity to bat higher up the order in the future.
“I was anyway going to bat at No. 5. I was padded up for two sessions. I was very glad that I got that opportunity. If I could bat higher up the order in future, it would be a blessing,” said the 25-year-old.
During the match, he formed a crucial partnership with Ravindra Jadeja. He said that the conversation was only about concentrating on each delivery and playing it on the merit of the ball.
“We wanted to let go off the thoughts of result and just concentrate on each and every delivery. We just wanted to play to the merit of each delivery. The wicket was doing a bit. Building partnership was important. The first job was to see off the new ball,” Washington Sundar signed off.
Recapping the Manchester Test, stellar centuries from Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar in the second innings guided India to secure a draw in the fourth test match of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy against England at Old Trafford, Manchester, on Sunday.
India batted for more than five sessions to save the Manchester Test. India, at the end of the final session on Day 5, was 425/4, with Jadeja 107* and Sundar 101* unbeaten at the crease. The duo added 203 runs for the fifth wicket.
Ben Stokes was awarded player of the match for his brilliant five-wicket haul, followed by a stellar hundred in the first innings. This was his consecutive POTM award in the ongoing series.
