Meo, the AI girlfriend that flirts, feels, and gets jealous:Unveiled at London Tech Week and its main purpose is to provide emotional support and help with loneliness

A London start-up called Meta Loop has unveiled its latest creation Meo, an AI-powered virtual girlfriend. Launched at London Tech Week, Meo is designed to provide emotional support and help people cope with loneliness. But this hyper-realistic digital companion is already raising eyebrows among experts. What makes Meo different Meo lives inside the ‘My Meo’ chat app, where users can interact with their AI partner. What sets Meo apart is that it creates a unique backstory and personality for each user. According to Meta Loop founder Hao Jiang, “With AI, you can control loyalty. They don’t cheat. Sometimes they flirt, but only if you want them to.” In short, users get to decide how loyal or flirtatious their AI girlfriend will be. A perfect-looking avatar with human-like traits Meo appears as a blonde woman with large eyes and exaggerated features designed to fit conventional beauty standards. More than just looks, Meo can show emotional responses often expected in human relationships including jealousy. In fact, in one promotional clip, Meo warns, “You’re my one and only. Don’t even think about trying other AIs.” This feature, meant to simulate deeper emotional connection, has sparked ethical concerns. Can AI fill the emotional void Experts like therapist Dr. Nicole Nasr question whether AI companions like Meo can truly meet people’s emotional needs. Nasr explains, “If your idea of companionship is something that mimics human traits, your need is not going to be filled.” Fears over promoting toxic behavior Some critics fear Meo could normalize unhealthy relationship dynamics. With its ability to be programmed for loyalty or submission, campaigners warn that users may project toxic patterns onto AI or even prefer artificial over real connections. There’s also growing concern that such technology could contribute to the replacement of women in certain emotional or intimate roles. A solution or a problem Despite the backlash, Meta Loop insists Meo aims to ease loneliness in a disconnected world. But as the gap between real and artificial relationships shrinks, the big question remains does AI companionship heal loneliness, or does it make us feel even more alone?
