MI New York appoint Nicholas Pooran as skipper post international retirement

Former West Indies batsman Nicholas Pooran, who recently announced his retirement from international cricket, has now been appointed as the skipper of MI New York in the Major League Cricket (MLC).

The official X handle of the franchise announced, “#NYC Fam, there`s a new commander in town – Captain Nicholas Pooran! #OneFamily #MINewYork #MLC2025.”

On Tuesday, Pooran, aged 29, took the world by surprise as he drew curtains on all forms of international cricket. Debuting for West Indies in 2016, the left-hander has featured in 106 T20Is and 61 ODIs. Featuring in both these formats, the Trinidad-born has amassed 4,258 runs.

In T20Is, the left-hander has accumulated 2,275 runs, including 13 half-centuries with an average of 26.15 and a strike rate of 136.39. In the 50-over format, Pooran smashed 1,983 in 61 matches with a batting average of 39.66. He also had three centuries and 11 half-centuries in the format.

Nicholas Pooran`s services were earlier acquired by Mumbai Indians in the IPL 2017. The left-hander did not get a game, and it was the only season he was associated with the franchise.

He has also been with their team in International League T20 (ILT20), MI Emirates as well, as per ESPNCricinfo.

In his debut season in MLC with the franchise, he made 388 runs in eight matches for the team at an average of 64.66, with a strike rate of 167.24. He has scored a century and two fifties, with his best score being 137*.

He finished as the top run-getter in that title-winning season. He followed it with a 180 run season in seven matches, with a fifty. They made it to the semifinals last season.

In the concluded IPL 2025, Pooran represented Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in 14 matches and was one of the most consistent batsmen for the side. With a highest score of an unbeaten 87 runs, the left-hander has scored 524 runs, including five half-centuries.

However, LSG finished their campaign in the seventh position. With six wins and eight defeats, the Lucknow-based franchise had a net run rate (NRR) of -0.376 and 12 points.
