OpenAI is saying goodbye to GPT-4:Microsoft-backed AI giant will remove its older model from ChatGPT on April 30; how it affects your experience
OpenAI has officially announced that GPT-4 will retire from ChatGPT on April 30, 2025. Taking its place? The newer, faster, and smarter GPT-4o, which now becomes the default model for all users. What’s GPT-4o all about If you’ve been using ChatGPT recently, chances are you’ve already met GPT-4o. The “o” stands for “omni”, and for good reason — this model can handle text, images, and audio all at once. It’s more than just an upgrade; it’s a full-blown evolution in how AI understands and interacts with us. Users are already noticing the difference: quicker responses, smoother conversations, and sharper answers. Why retire GPT-4 Launched in March 2023, GPT-4 was a major leap for ChatGPT, powering intelligent chats, creative writing, and advanced reasoning. But tech moves fast. And GPT-4o isn’t just better — it’s better at everything: writing, coding, STEM tasks, and following instructions. Since GPT-4o’s launch in May 2024, OpenAI has slowly rolled it out to Plus users. Now, it’s the default model for both free and paid tiers. Still need GPT-4 Don’t worry — GPT-4 isn’t vanishing completely. Developers and enterprise users can still access it through the OpenAI API. But for ChatGPT users, it’s all GPT-4o from here on out. What’s next OpenAI’s shift signals a bold new direction. With multimodal capabilities and lightning-fast processing, GPT-4o is just the beginning. The company is already working on GPT-5 and other “o” series models to unify and refine its AI ecosystem. They even previewed GPT-4.5, codenamed Orion, earlier in 2025 as a stepping stone. GPT-4o is live and here to stay. You don’t need to change anything — just enjoy a more powerful and seamless ChatGPT experience. And knowing OpenAI, this probably isn’t the last big leap we’ll see.
