Following the passing of Pope Francis on Monday morning, Serie A and Primavera matches scheduled for Easter Monday have been officially postponed as a mark of mourning, the league confirmed in a statement.
Pope Francis, who passed away at the age of 88 on Easter Monday, had an undeniable impact on the world, not just spiritually but also culturally, with a profound influence on global affairs.
In light of his death, the remaining fixtures in the 33rd round of Serie A have been postponed indefinitely. Matches originally slated for Easter Monday, including Torino-Udinese, Cagliari-Fiorentina, Genoa-Lazio, and Parma-Juventus, will now be rescheduled.
The league has yet to determine when these games will be held, but they are expected to be completed before the final weekend of the 2024-25 Serie A season, which is set for May 25.
Six matches had already been played over the Easter weekend. The action kicked off with Como’s dominant 3-0 victory over Lecce and Napoli’s narrow 1-0 win over Monza. Roma also secured a 1-0 win against Hellas Verona on Saturday. The games continued on Easter Sunday, with Empoli and Venezia playing out a 2-2 draw, Bologna edging past Inter 1-0, and Atalanta claiming a 1-0 win over Milan in an away match.
Pope Francis, the first Latin American pontiff in history, was known for his humility and deep commitment to the marginalized. His critiques of capitalism and calls for climate action often stirred controversy, particularly among conservative factions, but he maintained an unwavering focus on addressing the issues of poverty and inequality. His death marks the end of an era of leadership that was both revolutionary and compassionate.
Pope Francis had been suffering from a chronic lung condition, which led to part of one of his lungs being removed during his youth. He was admitted to the Gemelli Hospital on February 14, 2025, after a respiratory crisis escalated into double pneumonia. His 38-day hospitalisation became the longest of his 12-year papacy. His passing on Easter Monday brings an end to the papacy of a leader who reshaped the Catholic Church’s global role.
