On Day 1 of the fifth and final Test match against England, Team India`s Karun Nair scored an unbeaten 52 runs. His knock came in 98 balls, including seven boundaries.

Speaking about his knock, Team India`s assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate said that he is a quality player for absorbing the pressure well.

In the post-match presser, Doeschate said, “He started off at six in the first test and then batted at three for the other two tests. I always said, and we always thought, that his tempo and his rhythm were very good. He is a quality player, particularly for that reason that he can absorb the pressure. So going in today at a different position, again, I thought he summed up the conditions really well”.

The coach also said that if a player like him is returning to the side after years of a long wait, the pressure keeps mounting to deliver performances.

“Look, when someone comes back into the test side like he does after a lengthy absence, the pressure is always there, and I think he has handled that very well,” he added.

Further speaking, Doeschate said that it is not easy to represent a country like India and is hopeful of Karun getting a big score on Day 2 at The Oval.

“When you are representing a country like India, you do not expect it easy, and the guys are attuned to going there and dealing with the pressure. Hats off to Karun. I think he has had a really good tour with that, blowing the lights out. But he has given himself a chance now, tomorrow, to get a big, meaningful score for the team,” said the 45-year-old.

On Day 2, Nair, along with Washington Sundar, will resume with the overnight score of 204 runs for the loss of six wickets.

On the other hand, Sundar is unbeaten at the crease on a score of 19 runs off 45 deliveries. So far, he also has two boundaries to his name.

Gus Atkinson and Josh Tongue have managed to claim two wickets each to their names. Chris Woakes, too, has bagged one wicket. Jamie Overton and Jacob Bethell are yet to claim any wickets.
