World’s largest digital camera is set to unveil first images:The images from Vera C. Rubin Observatory’s LSST camera will be released on June 23
Get ready for a cosmic treat! The Vera C. Rubin Observatory’s LSST Camera—the world’s largest and most powerful digital camera is all set to reveal its first stunning images of the universe on June 23. This marks the start of its ambitious mission: to create an ultra-HD timelapse of the night sky over the next ten years. A giant eye on the sky The LSST Camera is no ordinary device. Weighing 3,000 kg and about the size of a small car, it took 20 years to build. Earlier this year, it was installed on the Simonyi Survey Telescope in Chile. Powered by a massive 3,200-megapixel sensor and equipped with three lenses, it’s designed to spot billions of distant galaxies, as well as dim and hidden objects in space. Capturing the southern sky Each image will cover an area equal to 45 full Moons and the entire southern hemisphere sky will be mapped every 3-4 nights, capturing light from near-ultraviolet to near-infrared wavelengths. Why it matters The data will help scientists unlock mysteries about dark matter, dark energy, the Milky Way, our Solar System, and dynamic objects in the night sky. Don’t miss the first glimpse watch the live press event on June 23 at 8:30 PM IST on the Rubin Observatory’s YouTube channel!
