After BLR Room, Dadar’s Chaitanya opens in Thane, along with these others

While every Mumbaikar wants to dine in Bandra’s newest eatery, there is a refreshing change simmering in Thane as there are a lot of new cafes and restaurants opening there including Dadar’s iconic seafood restaurant Chaitanya that opened there in late April. Interestingly, the eatery famous for its Malvani dishes is one of many that has opened in the region in the last few months.
Even as The Rameshwaram Café opened in Churchgate and KTR Room opened in Bandra, the latter part of March saw Bangalore Room, popularly known as BLR Room, another South Indian restaurant open in Thane, to serve Bengaluru flavours in the region, so that people don’t have to go to Churchgate or Matunga, which is known as the South Indian food hub in Mumbai. The restaurant is situated at Asteria High Street, and now Chaitanya has opened up at Centrum Business Square in Wagle Industrial Estate.
Celebrating India cuisines from regions in Karnataka and Maharashtra, these new restaurants are infusing new life into the region that was once known to be an industrial area, apart from boasting about its greener patches. After opening in Dadar in 2010, less than 20 years after first opening their eatery in Malvan, the Walke family has now extended their footprint to other parts of the city, and Thane is at the centre of it with a 90-seater spread across ground and first floor, imagined as a contemporary Malvani home.
The menu includes highlights such as Surmai Fry, Bombil Fry, Fried Prawns, Chicken Sukka and Mutton Masala, and the classic fish curry, rice, and solkadhi. The Thane outpost also introduces a tandoor. From the tandoor, the Pomfret Tandoor, Roasted Kaleji, and Tandoor Crab are flame-roasted to a delicate char, crisp at the edges, tender within.
Apart from Chaitanya, even Flour & Feine, a coffee roastery has opened in Thane at the Iris Shopping Building in Hiranandani Meadows, highlighting a growing trend of not just regional cuisine but also cafes that people can opt to explore while they are there, and hopefully not have to travel all the way to Bandra, Lower Parel or Andheri.
