Former national chief selector and India’s 1983 World Cup-winning team batsman Sandeep Patil is all set to begin his new innings with Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) as Team Mentor for men’s senior as well as all age group teams.

MCA president Ajinkya Naik confirmed the appointment of Patil, who was the chairman of senior Mumbai team selection committee in 2016 and later lost MCA’s presidential election to the late Amol Kale in 2022.

“I’m a bit nervous because I’ll be joining MCA [again], as my journey started exactly 50 years back in my 1975-76 first Ranji season, and 50 years later I’m getting this opportunity [as a Team Mentor]. I’m thrilled, I’m excited, but at the same time, there’ll be a lot of pressure because of a lot of expectations. Bombay being the champions for 42 years, it’s a big responsibility. But I’m glad that MCA has given me this opportunity,” Patil told mid-day on Wednesday.

“I’m yet to start. 1st July I begin my role with MCA officially. Will take things step by step. Let’s see how it works,” said Patil, who represented the country in 29 Tests and 45 ODIs, adding that former India batsman and Mumbai skipper Ashok Mankad was his first Mentor.

Naik told mid-day that Patil’s guidance to Mumbai players will be a big help.

“The MCA Apex Council and Cricket Improvement Committee unanimously took this decision to have Sandeep sir with us. He is a huge asset for Mumbai cricket. His experience and insights will play a key role in developing our players and helping our teams perform at the highest level. We are delighted to have him on board,” Naik told mid-day on Wednesday.
