From Aryabhata to Gaganyaan, nation’s independent capability:How India’s space journey is reaching for the Moon, Mars and beyond
When India looks back at 80 years of independence, one of its most remarkable journeys has taken place far above Earth. From a country that once relied heavily on foreign launchers to put satellites into orbit, India has built the capability to launch its own spacecraft, explore the Moon and Mars, study the Sun, perform complex operations in orbit and prepare to send humans into space. India’s space story is therefore no longer just about launching satellites. It is about building the capability to explore, operate and eventually live beyond Earth. From Aryabhata to a homegrown launch capability India’s space programme took an important early step with Aryabhata, the country’s first satellite, launched in 1975. It marked the beginning of India’s journey towards developing its own expertise in spacecraft and space science. The next decades saw India build increasingly capable launch vehicles and satellites. The Satellite Launch Vehicle (SLV-3) demonstrated India’s ability to place a satellite in orbit using an indigenous rocket, while the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) eventually became one of ISRO’s most dependable launchers. This foundation allowed India to move from learning how to reach space to using space for communication, weather forecasting, Earth observation, navigation, and scientific research. Chandrayaan put India on the Moon India’s lunar exploration began with Chandrayaan-1 in 2008. The mission transformed India from a country developing space technology into an active participant in planetary science. Among its significant findings was evidence of water molecules and hydroxyl on the lunar surface. Chandrayaan-2, launched in 2019, went further with an orbiter, lander, and rover. Although the lander could not achieve a soft landing, its orbiter continued its scientific work around the Moon. Then came Chandrayaan-3 in 2023. Its successful landing of the Vikram lander and deployment of the Pragyan rover near the lunar south polar region marked a historic achievement. India became the fourth country to demonstrate a soft landing on the Moon and the first to land in the southern polar region. The mission also demonstrated technologies needed for future planetary exploration. The next step is even more ambitious. Chandrayaan-4 is designed to collect lunar samples and bring them back to Earth. That means India will have to master a far more complex chain of operations, from landing and collecting samples on the Moon to returning the material safely to Earth. From Mars to the Sun The Mars Orbiter Mission, or Mangalyaan, entered Martian orbit in 2014, making India the first Asian nation to reach Mars orbit on its first attempt. The spacecraft was designed for a six-month mission but remained operational for years, demonstrating India’s ability to design and operate an interplanetary spacecraft. India then turned its eyes towards the Sun. Aditya-L1, launched in 2023, is India’s first dedicated solar mission. Positioned around the Sun-Earth L1 point, it continuously observes the Sun and studies phenomena such as solar flares, coronal mass ejections and space weather. The mission is helping scientists better understand solar activity and how it affects the environment around Earth. Other missions have expanded India’s space-science capabilities. AstroSat studies celestial objects across multiple wavelengths, while XPoSat, launched in 2024, is designed to study the polarisation of X-rays from extreme cosmic sources. Gaganyaan: India prepares to send humans into space Perhaps the biggest transition in India’s space programme is now underway: moving from sending machines into space to sending Indians. The Gaganyaan programme aims to demonstrate human spaceflight by carrying a crew of three to a 400-km orbit for about three days before bringing them safely back to Earth.
The programme involves technologies ranging from crew escape systems and life support to astronaut training and a human-rated launch system. Axiom-4: Advancing human spaceflight capabilities India has already gained valuable human spaceflight experience through Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla’s. He became the first Indian astronaut to travel to the International Space Station (ISS) as part of the Axiom-4 mission, launched on June 25, 2025.
During the mission, he contributed to scientific experiments and gained valuable experience in microgravity and human spaceflight operations.
The mission concluded successfully on July 15, 2025, providing India with important expertise that will support future crewed missions, including Gaganyaan. NavIC — India’s Indigenous Navigation System India’s NavIC (Navigation with Indian Constellation) is its homegrown satellite navigation system, providing positioning, navigation, and timing services across India and up to 1,500 km beyond its borders.
It strengthens India’s strategic and technological independence while supporting everyday applications. The second-generation NVS-01 and NVS-02 satellites were launched in 2023 and 2025, with more satellites planned to improve the system’s reliability and continuity. The next destination: Venus and India’s own space station The roadmap does not end with Gaganyaan. The Venus Orbiter Mission, planned for 2028, will investigate Venus’ atmosphere, surface and subsurface and study the planet’s interaction with the solar environment. It will also demonstrate technologies required to operate around one of the most challenging planets in the solar system. At the same time, India is working towards the Bharatiya Antariksh Station (BAS). The planned station is targeted for the 2030s and is expected to provide a platform for long-duration human spaceflight, scientific experiments and microgravity research. India’s broader space vision also includes eventually sending Indian astronauts to the Moon using indigenous technologies. From reaching space to staying in space Now the questions are becoming even bigger: Can India bring samples back from the Moon? And can Indian astronauts eventually walk on the Moon? As India celebrates 80 years of independence, its space programme stands at the beginning of another chapter. The ambition is to become a nation capable of exploring, working, and eventually living there.
