Old coins found during excavation for dharmshala, library in Punjab village

Old coins were discovered during excavation for the construction of a dharmshala and library in Gharuan village in Punjab’s Mohali, officials said on Wednesday, prompting authorities to deploy police after locals gathered at the site in search of the coins.

The discovery came to light on Tuesday evening, after which a large number of locals, including women and children, reached the site and began searching the dug-up earth, some using torch lights, officials said.

Locals claimed that a pot containing old silver coins had been found during the excavation. The coins reportedly bear Urdu inscriptions, but their age, origin and historical significance have not yet been established.

A local said some people took coins from the site and left.

Gharuan Executive Officer Ravi Kumar Jindal said a dharmshala and library were being constructed at the site and some coins were found during excavation.

The site has been secured by deploying policemen, he said, adding that he had written to the Chandigarh office of the Archaeological Survey of India regarding the discovery.

Jindal said some rooms of the panchayat building at the site had earlier been demolished to make way for the dharmshala and library.

Gharuan SHO Balwinder Singh said a sub-inspector and two policemen had been deployed at the site.
