The festive spirit of Diwali arrived in Maharashtra on Thursday with the celebration of ‘Vasu Baras’, which marks the commencement of the ‘festival of lights’.

The day is dedicated to honouring the cow and her calf, symbolising agricultural wealth, fertility, and maternal bonding.

Married women worship cows along with calves at many places, offering them food, including sweets.

‘Diyas’ (lamps) are lit in the evening and homes are decorated with flowers and rangoli. People decorate the facades of their homes with sky lanterns.

As the festival began, markets were buzzing with people.

‘Dhantrayodashi’ or ‘Dhanteras’ will be celebrated on Friday, while Sunday will mark ‘Narak Chaturdashi’ as well as ‘Laxmi Pujan’, the main day of the Diwali festival.
