India is preparing to launch a new kind of Earth-observation satellite. ISRO’s GSLV-F17 rocket will carry EOS-05 into a high orbit, allowing the satellite to repeatedly watch large parts of the country from space. The mission is significant not just because of the satellite, but also because it comes after a seven-month gap following the failure of the PSLV-C62 mission in January 2026. If successful, EOS-05 could help India get faster updates during cyclones, floods, forest fires, and other events that can change quickly. The rocket will use the GSLV Mk II configuration and place EOS-05 into a Sub-Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit, or Sub-GTO. From there, the satellite will move towards its planned geosynchronous orbit. GSLV-F17 will be the 19th flight of India’s Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle. The rocket is about 51.7 metres tall and weighs around 420.5 tonnes at liftoff. The mission will take off using the four-metre-wide composite ogive payload fairing, which protects the satellite during its journey through the atmosphere. What is EOS-05? EOS-05 is an advanced Earth-observation satellite being developed by ISRO. Why is EOS-05 being placed in geosynchronous orbit? The biggest advantage is repeat coverage. A satellite in geosynchronous orbit can stay aligned with the same broad region of Earth as the planet rotates. From nearly 36,000 km above the surface, EOS-05 will be able to keep a wide view of the Indian landmass. This means it can repeatedly observe changes instead of waiting for a low-orbit satellite to make another pass. That makes the orbit particularly useful for tracking weather systems, disasters, and other rapidly changing situations. However, operating so far from Earth also involves a trade-off. The greater distance can make it harder to achieve the same level of fine image detail possible with some lower-orbit imaging satellites. Is GSLV-F17 an important mission or just another launch? GSLV-F17 is an important mission for several reasons. First, it will demonstrate a new Earth-observation capability for India. Second, it will test the GSLV Mk II’s ability to place this type of satellite into the required orbit. The mission also comes at an important time for ISRO. The agency has been under focus after the PSLV-C62 mission failed in January 2026. GSLV-F17 is being prepared separately from the PSLV programme.
