Digital KYC or e-KYC process has now been made mandatory for obtaining a new mobile SIM connection. Along with this, the government has also placed a strict ban on the issuance of bulk SIM cards for general consumers. According to the rules of the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), any one individual can hold a maximum of 9 mobile connections in their name using their Aadhaar card. This rule was created to regulate connections, but given the increasing misuse of Aadhaar details, it has now become necessary to check from time to time how many SIMs are active on your identity. Why has the risk of fraud increased? Telecom companies accept Aadhaar as a valid proof of identity and address for issuing a new SIM card. While this makes Aadhaar-based verification easier, it can pose a major risk if your ID falls into the wrong hands. Fraudsters allegedly purchase SIM cards using another person’s identity documents. These numbers are then used for fake calls, SMS, social media accounts, or financial fraud.
