IND vs WI 5th T20: Indian bowlers Hope to stop Shai

[[{“value”:”

Having traversed the length and the breadth of the country, the five-match T20I series has pitched tent here for Saturday’s final act of a bat-dominated showdown that is dead square at 2-2.

Batters dominate series

India and West Indies have matched each other blow for stunning blow. Every scything four and every towering six has thrust the dagger deeper into the collective heart of the bowling fraternity, which has endured flat tracks, powerful batters, quick outfields, and debilitating dew uncomplainingly. The margin for error has been minuscule bordering on the non-existent and even targets of 250 aren’t safe, a sad commentary on the state of affairs that encourages a shocking mismatch between bat and ball.

The spectators who cram venues hoping to see the ball disappear far and wide have had their hearts’ fill, though Bengalureans will spend an anxious next several hours wondering if they will be able to partake of any entertainment at all. It has been raining continually for the last couple of days, and India’s scheduled optional practice on match eve had to be abandoned. Perhaps just as well, because a majority of the squad has had a whirlwind last day and a half, taking the long route from Hyderabad to the Garden City via New Delhi, where they were felicitated on Thursday for winning the Asian Games gold medal earlier this month.

Bengaluru’s first international fixture in more than two years is entirely at the mercy of the elements. Not since New Zealand cantered to victory in October 2024 in the first of three Tests has the M Chinnaswamy Stadium hosted the national side; every stakeholder will be desperately hoping the series hurtles to its logical denouement.

Bhuvneshwar brought in

Shai Hope, the admirably impressive West Indian captain, will be keen to get out and extend a glorious run which has fetched him four centuries in seven white-ball internationals in the last three weeks. India haven’t been able to find a way to stop his commanding march, though by bringing experienced pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar back into the T20I mix after nearly four years, the hosts might feel they have an ace up their sleeve.

The 36-year-old hasn’t represented the country since November 2022, but has been one of the prime influencers of Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s successive IPL triumphs in the last two seasons. Acknowledging his incisiveness and tacitly admitting that the current resources need a stronger guiding hand in the absence of Jasprit Bumrah, India’s selectors have dipped deep into the past. Bhuvneshwar will be on the flight to New Zealand immediately after this game for the T20I series starting in Christchurch on Thursday, and will welcome a chance to shake off rust at a happy hunting ground.
