Morkel wants young bowlers to make smarter decisions under pressure

Acknowledging the challenges of bowling on flat pitches against West Indies, India’s fast bowling coach Morne Morkel urged his wards to “move on” and make “smart decisions” under pressure.
“Obviously, you need to move on. It is quite a quick turnaround in between games. You do not have the luxury of training sessions where you can go and work on a lot of stuff,” Morkel said.
“You also want to take the learnings. So, we had a very nice sort of sit-down discussion this [Friday] morning with some of the bowlers just to identify certain areas and what we can expect here. For me, it is just how we can get a younger sort of bowling attack to make smarter decisions under pressure,” he added.
Morkel lauded the bowlers for delivering more often than not while rising above the “mental fatigue” caused by a tight schedule.
“I read everything that’s written on social media. One thing that we sometimes forget is that mental fatigue plays a big part. We have to manage that and you have to be smart with it. If you look at this T20 side, some of the players participated in the Asian Games, and then went straight into a full series now [vs the West Indies],” Morkel said.
“Then they had to fly off to Delhi for a presentation there [meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi] and back here in the morning. And, now, we have to get them ready for a game. So, that is the reality and these guys are also human,” he added.
