Telangana steps up water curbs as El Niño looms large
In a proactive move, Telangana is set to impose restrictions on groundwater extraction for non-potable use in sensitive regions. The government intends to ban new borewell drilling in a bid to combat groundwater depletion. Offenders could face hefty fines ranging from Rs 5,000 to Rs 1 lakh for unauthorized extraction. Through the enforcement of specific WALTA Act provisions, this initiative is designed to promote sustainable groundwater resource management.
