India’s six-time world champion and Olympics medallist boxer Mary Kom still possesses that fire and energy and is aiming to make a comeback even at the age of 43. Mary Kom, who won the bronze medal at the London Olympics in 2012, is confident that she can make her presence felt in the ring for another two to three years. “I really want to [make a] comeback, because my life is always connected with boxing. I have achieved so much for my country, but my hunger is still there and I want to fight for another two, three years.
If the nation supports, loves and [gives their] blessings, I will definitely come back very soon,” Mary Kom told mid-day on the sidelines of the IBA Global Boxing Series (GBS) at Nexus Seawoods Mall in Navi Mumbai, where she was the chief guest. She has many offers too, but is waiting for the right one: “I was looking for a good opportunity [as a professional boxer]. Many offers came through in the last two years, but there are certain things that I avoided and ignored because I didn’t want to. But let’s see in the future.”
Mary Kom, who also clinched gold at the 2014 Asian Games at Incheon, South Korea and bronze in the 2010 Guangzhou Asian Games in China, reckoned that Indian boxers will do well at the upcoming Asian Games to be held in Japan (September 19 to October 4). “They [Indian boxers] are training so hard, I wish and pray that we win many medals at the Asian Games,” said Mary Kom, before adding, “My message to the GBS boxers here is to work hard, train hard and achieve something in life either as an amateur or professional boxer.”
