Relying on artificial intelligence to verify news may actually make people less capable of identifying misinformation, according to a new study from the MIT Media Lab.
The findings draw parallels with GPS navigation, which has been shown to weaken people’s natural sense of direction over time. In a series of experiments, participants who used AI assistance were more likely to defer to the technology’s judgment, even when it was wrong.
