AI will work for you even on switched-off phones:Google’s Gemini agents mark new front in battle with OpenAI
Google is no longer positioning itself solely as a search company. Its new ambition is to dominate consumer artificial intelligence, much like it once ruled internet search.
With a fresh lineup of AI-powered tools and agents, the company is making an aggressive push to challenge rivals such as OpenAI and Anthropic. Gemini 3.5 Flash powers a new generation of AI agents At its recent developer event, Google unveiled several AI agents built on its latest Gemini 3.5 Flash model. Alongside advanced coding assistants designed to compete with AI coding tools from OpenAI and Anthropic, Google introduced agents capable of performing tasks independently on behalf of users. From chatbots to ‘working AI’ Google’s strategy is moving beyond traditional chatbots. The company is developing AI systems that can continue handling tasks even when users are not actively using their devices. One such assistant, called ‘Gemini Spark,’ can manage activities like sorting emails, planning group travel, and handling routine digital tasks automatically. At the same time, new Information Agents integrated into Google Search will monitor sports events, shopping deals, and stock market activity, providing updates without constant user intervention. Gemini’s massive reach could strengthen Google’s position Many of these AI features will be integrated directly into the Gemini app, which serves nearly 900 million monthly users. Others will become part of Google Search, giving the company access to one of the world’s largest user bases. This broad distribution could increase competition for OpenAI and its ChatGPT platform. OpenAI faces growing competition Google’s rapid AI progress has already drawn attention from competitors. Reports suggest that after the launch of Gemini 3, OpenAI intensified its focus on AI coding products. The arrival of Gemini 3.5 Flash and Google’s expanding AI ecosystem has once again fueled debate over whether ChatGPT can maintain its lead in the market. Meanwhile, investor confidence in Google’s AI strategy appears strong, with parent company Alphabet’s market valuation rising significantly since the start of the year. Rising AI usage brings new challenges While adoption continues to grow, so do the costs. According to Google CEO Sundar Pichai, AI usage has surged dramatically, with monthly token processing now reaching several quadrillion tokens. This rapid growth is placing increasing demands on computing infrastructure and operational resources. To offset growing expenses, Google could eventually expand advertising within its AI offerings.
Although the Gemini app currently remains ad-free, the company has already started displaying advertisements alongside AI-generated search responses.
This suggests the future AI battle may revolve not only around technology but also around advertising revenue and user data. AI infrastructure costs continue to climb Running advanced AI models requires enormous computing power. As a result, Google’s capital expenditure is expected to increase nearly sixfold compared to four years ago, reaching approximately ₹18.18 lakh crore this year. Rising chip prices and higher electricity costs could push spending even higher in the years ahead.
