Defending champions Arsenal kicked off their Premier League title defence in convincing style, securing a comfortable 3-0 win over newly-promoted Coventry City at Emirates Stadium.

Building on their 3-0 FA Community Shield victory against Manchester City, the home side established dominance to start the league season with a win.

New arrival Christos Tzolis made an immediate impact on his Premier League debut, contributing directly to the opening two goals. The Greek winger won possession in the 15th minute before Kai Havertz opened the scoring. Eight minutes later, Tzolis sent in a cross that Coventry goalkeeper Carl Rushworth could only turn into Bukayo Saka’s path, allowing the England forward to double the advantage.

Coventry, returning to the top flight after 25 years away, found it difficult to contain Arsenal’s free-flowing football. Four minutes into the second half, Martin Odegaard added a third to put the result beyond doubt.

The triumph marked Mikel Arteta’s 150th Premier League victory as Arsenal manager. Reaching the mark in 249 matches, Arteta joined Pep Guardiola (204), Jose Mourinho (231), Jürgen Klopp (237), and Sir Alex Ferguson (247) in an elite group of managers to hit 150 wins in fewer than 250 games.

Assessing the performance after the final whistle, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta expressed satisfaction with his team’s display.

“There was a lot to like. We were really dominant and flowed with the ball, connecting well with one another. We should have scored more goals,” he said.

“When you talk about connection and chemistry, those three [Saka, Odegaard and Ben White] have that. They played so many minutes together in the past, but they didn’t play much last year due to different situations. Even on the left side with Tzolis, you are seeing different dynamics. I was really impressed,” he added.

Coventry manager Frank Lampard took encouragement from his players’ effort despite the result.

“There are Premier League debuts; there is noise here, I remember that [as a player]. It is different to the Championship in a way, no matter where you go. So those things are things to handle as a player, and we talked about a lot before the game. They will have to go through that and experience that,” he signed off.
